“Stigma surrounding the receipt of mental health treatment is among the many barriers that discourage people from seeking treatment” – Former US Surgeon General David Satcher
There’s a link between poor knowledge and stigma.
Studies by the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry show that increased mental health literacy is associated with a reduction in stigmatizing attitudes.
A seminar-based study found that by providing data on schizophrenia, depression, and ADHD to journalists, they gained a greater awareness of mental health problems and less stigmatizing attitudes.
Reach out to NAMI-Eastside for more information on reducing stigma!
